Behind the Studies: How to Recruit, Retain and Develop Best Practices for LGBT Lawyers

In November 2007, the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF)’s Equality Committee on LGBT Issues published a groundbreaking report addressing best practices for the workplace and LGBT lawyers.  Geared for the legal community, the report’s best practices are applicable to almost any employment setting.  In this workshop, committee members involved in drafting the 2007 report will outline the Report’s recommendations including:

  • How to create a firm culture that is inclusive of LGBT lawyers
  • How to guarantee non-discrimination against LGBT employees regarding benefits
  • How to foster the professional development of LGBT lawyers
  • How to effectively and affirmatively recruit LGBT lawyers
  • How to make progress on issues important to transgender employees
This workshop will present a concise roadmap and discussion of best practices in LGBT employment. You will leave the workshop with a checklist of best practices, strategies, and resources for implementation in your workplace

From FAIR (v. Rumsfeld) to Equal: The Top Five Things Law Students Can Do to Address the Discrimination Inherent in the Solomon Amendment

This workshop is a "where we go from here" discussion regarding the Supreme Court's 2006 decision in FAIR v. Rumsfeld upholding the constitutionality of the Solomon Amendment. As a national constituency of advocates-in-training with a long-standing commitment to nondiscrimination in recruiting and a history that includes achieving a partial Congressional repeal of the Solomon Amendment in 1999, law students are uniquely situated to accelerate the effort to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Law students will return home from this practical workshop with concrete tools to advocate for the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," using traditional methods, such as face-to-face lobbying and letter-writing campaigns, and more creative vehicles. Students will also leave understanding how to integrate these efforts into broader law school ameliorative efforts.

The Dan Bradley Award

Presentation of the 2008 Dan Bradley Award to Shannon Minter, the Legal Director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Therese Stewart, the Chief  Deputy City Attorney for San Francisco.

Both Shannon Minter and Therese Stewart have continually set an example in the LGBT community during their years of service. One recent, noteworthy example of their involvement is the California marriage cases. Shannon served as the lead litigator, and Therese argued the case for the city and directed strategy for the lawsuit. Their success is certainly a feather in their cap, and is a fitting result to their years of hard work.
